When I started this blog last year, one of my goals was to create and publish content on a weekly basis. Halfway through the year, I found myself juggling a lot of things which resulted in my unintentional absence. Since this is the beginning of a new year, I figured it’s the perfect time to work on this goal again.

The start of a new year brings so much excitement and for good reason. It’s the chance to let go of the previous year and start fresh with a clean slate. Many of us are reflecting on the things that went well and some of the things we may have missed the mark on last year. If you’re looking to make 2019 the year you accomplish your wildest dreams continue reading to learn 10 steps you can take to achieve your goals.

1) Create A List

The first step to achieve your goals is to make a list of things that are important to you. Consider this a “brain dump, writing down everything you would like to accomplish. Don’t focus so much on the length of your list. The important thing is to get all of your thoughts on paper. Once this step is done, you can begin evaluating which goals are the most important to you.

2) Rank Your Goals

After creating your list, the next step is to rank each goal based on its level of importance. I’ll admit this step can be difficult because when you look at all of the goals you’d like to achieve, each can feel like it’s highly important. In order to simplify this task, ask yourself which goals have stayed with you the longest. These are the goals you want to rank near the highest level of importance. From here you can begin to determine the amount of time needed to achieve each goal.

3) Set A Time Frame

How long will it take me to accomplish this goal? This is the question you must ask yourself as you pursue a new goal. By determining the amount of time required, you can reduce feeling stressed and overwhelmed. I suggest placing your goals into short-term and long-term categories right after you’ve created your list. Doing this allows you to set a time frame for each goal and to establish the proper action plan needed to be successful in your pursuit.

4) Create an Action Plan

A goal is just a wishful thought until you start working on it. The easiest part of goal planning is to think about what you want to accomplish. The hardest part of turning a goal into a reality is maintaining consistency, putting in the required work even when things are difficult. All too often we give up on our goals the moment things become difficult or require more work than we planned for. Creating an action plan that focuses on the required day-to-day tasks helps you to make progress towards meeting your goals.

5) Track Your Progress

You’ve made your list, determined the level of importance, set a time frame and created an action plan to achieve your goals. So how do you really know if you’re making progress? Between work and daily responsibilities, it can be difficult to measure the progress you’re making. Luckily there are many resources available to help you stay organized.

I like to use an everyday journal, physical planner and a digital calendar. Each of these items helps me to remain focused on the “big picture” and to track my daily progress. The best part of this system is that it doesn’t require anything fancy. Using an inexpensive journal planner and a digital calendar will help you to evaluate whether you need to make any adjustments to your goals.

6) Reevaluate Your Goals

With any goal you’re bound to experience a bump in the road. When this occurs you may have to take a step back and reevaluate certain areas. Some of the things you will need to determine is the time frame, (will you need more/ less) and if the goals need to be approached differently.

There’s nothing wrong if you have to take this course of action, as you want to give yourself the best opportunity to achieve each goal. If you find it difficult to stay optimistic and motivated after a setback, find someone who will hold you accountable and encourage you along the way.

7) Have an Accountability Partner

Aside from our own excitement, the joy of family and friends is one of the best feelings we can experience once we’ve achieved a major life goal. You see these displays of emotion during graduations, job promotions, and milestones such as becoming a first-time homeowner.

These events are the culmination of tireless work and in some cases, sleepless nights. What can go unnoticed is the silent fear, doubt, and frustration one may go through during the process of achieving a goal. I’m sure each of us experiences these feelings at some point, which can make it difficult to stay motivated.

Having an accountability partner is one way of keeping you motivated about your goals. Find someone who will provide positive feedback. You don’t want someone who makes you feel negative when you fall short or hit a bump in the road. With the right encouragement and support, you will be one step closer to achieving your goals.

8) Network With Others

Surrounding yourself around positive and influential people has a significant impact in achieving your goals. When you interact with others who share similar goals, you become energized and motivated, not only for yourself but for the other person as well. There are multiple ways to connect with others who can help facilitate your effort towards achieving a goal. You can watch a motivational person on YouTube, listen to a podcast or join a positive social media group.

9) Create A Personal Reward System

The pursuit of a goal can feel like a marathon race. Just when you think you’ve reached the finish line, you look up to see there’s still one mile left. When you come to this point tell yourself, “Now’s not the time to give up, you’re almost there”!! Learning to push yourself to the finish line takes focus and discipline. Establishing a reward system for each goal you accomplish is one way of keeping yourself motivated

The rewards don’t have to be extravagant, although if you’re in the financial position to do so, by all mean “treat yo self”. If you’re on a budget, doing things such as taking yourself out to eat, having a spa day, or doing a little retail therapy could be the perfect way to celebrate your achievements and to keep you motivated to achieve future goals.

10) Be Kind To Yourself

With all the goals and resolutions you commit to this year, remember to BE KIND TO YOURSELF! Setting goals helps us to improve many areas of our life; that said, it’s just as important to be kind to yourself throughout the process of achieving a goal. Know that it’s ok if you have to make adjustments or don’t achieve your goals right away. Keep working at it and give yourself credit for the progress you’re making. With the right type of planning, action, support, and consistency you will make 2019 one of the best years yet!!

Thank you Meagan! I’m glad you enjoyed reading the tips and yes, networking is a MUST. You learn so much from people who’ve already been in or are currently in a position you aspire to one day.

All great tips! I think one important thing about goal-setting is you have to set goals that are aligned with your values. If they don’t align with your core values then you will either lose motivation or once you’ve achieved the goals, it won’t feel as fulfilling. Another great method I use to achieve my goals is to not focus on the goal itself but rather spend my time working on the processes around the goal, breaking down these processes into tiny pieces of tasks I can do a bit each day and improve gradually. They call it the “marginal gains” method and it’s worked for me!

Sabrina you made some really good points! I definitely believe a goal has to be in alignment with who you are in order for it to be achieved. We tend to go after the things that are the most meaningful to us, even when challenges arise. I also agree with what you stated about working around a goal and breaking things down into smaller pieces. By taking this approach, you can celebrate the mini victories that come along the way. 🙂
