What is my life purpose? I’ve asked myself this question many times, but have yet to find a definitive answer. There are days when I feel like I’m closer to it being revealed. Then there are times when I wonder if I will ever know. Discovering your life purpose is a daily process. It’s defined largely in part by something meaningful to you.
Your life purpose influences your thinking, behavior, goals and helps to guide the decisions you make in life. One’s life purpose can be connected to their career, family, and beliefs. Factors such as these, help cultivate and shape how a person perceives their “calling” in life. For example, my faith has shaped the way I view not only my life but the world around me. With this awareness, I’m able to take gradual steps towards fully discovering my life purpose.

Wouldn’t it be great if we woke up one morning and knew what we were meant to do in life? Unfortunately, there aren’t enough leprechauns around to lead us to this pot of gold. Discovering your life purpose is a unique journey, full of lessons, trials, and surprises. Although there’s uncertainty when it comes to discovering your life purpose, there are “clues” within you that put you on a path towards finding out.
Developing a greater sense of self-awareness is a fundamental step towards discovering your life purpose. So how do you become self-aware? Start by thinking about what motivates you. What is that one thing that ignites your soul and dominates your thoughts? Once you recognize this passion and the talents you possess, you can begin to develop them into something meaningful to you. Then you will begin to pursue opportunities to bring it into existence.
When you find something you are truly passionate about, you want to become educated on the topic. Whether you are passionate about health, cooking or fashion, learn as much as you can about that topic. In doing this, you broaden your skills set and gradually become specialized in that specific area. Learning about your passion not only increases your knowledge, it aligns you with others who share similar passions.
Surrounding yourself with those who share the same pursuits as yourself, provides you with a community that can positively influence you. When you are around those who know their life purpose, it keeps you motivated and inspired. As a result, you are more likely to continue taking steps towards discovering your life purpose.
Finding a mentor, someone who’s trusted and has experience, will be of benefit to you as well. There’s nothing better than receiving the advice and wisdom from someone who’s already been down the path you are currently on.
Deciding to pursue your calling in life can be scary. There are doubts, worries, and sometimes naysayers that will make you question your pursuits. Speaking from experience, I know how these feelings can deter you. When I decided to start this blog and share my passion for promoting health wellness, I came up with a million reasons as to why I shouldn’t.
At first, I questioned whether the content I wanted to create was something others would find enjoyable to read. Then I had to overcome creative doubts. I eventually decided to pursue what I believe is my life’s purpose; helping others learn to become better versions of themselves physically, mentally and spiritually.
Whatever you believe is your life purpose, you must decide when to take action and pursue it. If you are uncertain where to begin, try volunteering with organizations and communities aligned with your passion. This will help you become familiar with the resources needed and required to serve that specific population.
For example, if you believe your life purpose is to improve childhood literacy, volunteer as an afterschool tutor at a local library. Over the years, I have volunteered with various organizations related to bringing awareness to certain health topics. Each volunteer opportunity has helped to reinforce my belief that my life purpose is to be involved in the promotion of living a well-balanced life.
Don’t give up on your life purpose just because it has its ups and downs. There will be moments when you question if what you’re pursuing is the right thing and if it’s going to make a difference in someone’s life the way you want it to. When these thoughts occur, focus on the positive things that motivate you each day. Keep striving towards them and let whatever you believe your life purpose is, guide you towards being the best version of yourself.
