Self-comparison is something we’ve all experienced at some point in life. It can be hard to escape considering the everyday presence of social media. In today’s post, I will be sharing 5 tips to help you eliminate self-comparison from your life.

Recognize Your Talents

Learning to recognize the unique qualities you possess is an important step in eliminating self-comparison. It’s okay if you think differently or do things others may view as “not the norm”. You are your own person, uniquely made and there’s nothing wrong with embracing that. If someone tries to make you feel bad about who you are, don’t believe them. Never accept an image someone else projects onto you. You know the truths about yourself, what your values are, and the kind of person you want to be in the world. If you don’t know who you are, what better day to start than today! Anything someone else tries to portray you as, especially if it’s negative, is their issue to deal with.

Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover

It’s easy to make assumptions about someone’s life based on the exterior presentation. In reality, you have no idea what someone is going through on a day-to-day basis. Behind a person’s warm bubbly smile could be deep pain they are experiencing that they never show. Before you create an image in your head of someone having the perfect life, realize that not everyone discusses or shows the not so great things that may be happening in their life.

Give Someone A Compliment

When you compare yourself to others, over time you can end up feeling envious. Elevating the success of another person, while diminishing your own achievements can lead you to develop an inferiority complex. Instead of envying what someone else has, learn to give them a genuine compliment. When you wish someone well on something they’ve done, it creates positive energy between the two of you. In addition, you never know how being kind and reaching out to someone can impact you in the future. Think of it this way, what you sow is what you reap.

Surround Yourself with Positive Affirmations

If there’s one thing I highly encourage you to do to eliminate self-comparison, it’s to practice positive affirmations. Getting caught up in someone else’s highlight real rarely leads to feeling good about yourself. Similar to what I stated in tip 3, it can make you feel envious. The only way to shift this type of mindset is to remind yourself of all the success and achievements you’ve made. Celebrate even the “smallest” of accomplishments because over time this continuous feedback will motivate you to continue to persevere.

Develop an Attitude of Gratitude

Remember, everything is temporary – so if your life isn’t where you thought it would be or where you want it to be don’t feel bad. We’re all on different paths in life, with some arriving at certain life milestones before others and that’s OKAY. Everything that is meant for you in life will arrive at its appropriate time. Continue to do things that bring joy to your life and that help you to become a better person.

Tell me, what are some of your tips for eliminating self-comparison.
