Self-Care impacts our wellness of life in many ways. Here are some tips to help nourish your mind, body & soul. // wellness / health wellness / self care / self care routine #selfcare #selfcareroutine #wellness

Do you remember the last time you treated yourself to a day of pampering and relaxation? If you can’t recall, you’re hardly alone. Our daily lives are filled with so many commitments and responsibilities that self-care is often put on the back burner. Taking time to relax and treat yourself is an important part of living a well-balanced life, impacting our mind, body, and spirit.

Mental Self-Care

  • Meditate and spend time in thought. You don’t have to focus on anything in particular; just allow your thoughts to form. This is something I like to do when I first wake up and before going to bed. I find with consistent practice, meditating also helps me to have a positive start to the week.
  • Make a to-do list of things you need to accomplish. Trying to remember everything that you need to do can add stress to your day, especially if you forget something. Keeping a to-do list, or agenda can help you manage your day a little better.
  • Unplugging from the digital world and enjoying the things in your physical presence. Much of our society is connected through various electronics. It would do many of us good to take a break from these devices. It may be difficult at first but try spending at least 1-2 hrs each day away from your phone, tablet, and anything else that has a chime, bell, or alert.
  • Read a motivational book. I’m a big fan of self-development books. Some of my favorites are Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, The Happiness of Pursuit, and #GIRLBOSS. Reading these types of books inspires me to continuously strive towards being the best version of myself.
  • Let go of the uncontrollable events and situations in life. This may be one of the most significant things you can do to develop better mental self-care. When we continue to think about things that are beyond our control, frustration, anger, and sadness can result. Learning to let go of these thoughts mentally frees us to enjoy the present.

Physical Self-Care

  • Developing healthy eating habits helps you to maintain the ability to carry out daily functions. The nutrients we obtain from the foods we eat has a great impact on our well-being. Try establishing healthier eating habits with one meal at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  • There are many benefits to regular exercise, which along with healthy eating, has a great impact on your well-being. Dedicating at least 30 minutes a few days each week is a good start towards your physical self-care. *Always check with your medical doctor before beginning a new workout regimen.
  • Getting enough sleep not only improves your mood, it helps your body repair itself which is crucial for daily functioning. The recommended amount of sleep for adults is 7-8 hours each night. Lifestyle factors may affect your sleeping patterns but aim to get as much quality sleep as possible each night.
  • Listen to your body and what it’s telling you. Don’t brush aside a lingering cough, persistent pain, and physical ailments that are not normal for you. While these things may go away with time, they may be symptoms of underlying issues. It’s better to err on the side of caution and seek medical intervention if any physical symptoms you’re experiencing cease to go away or become worse.
  • Appreciate your body for what it is and all that it does. This is something I consciously work at each day. We should all appreciate our body for the unique creation that it is. There’s not another person whose body can function 100% like yours. Instead of comparing it to others, learn to thank your body for everything that it allows you to do each day.

Soul Self-Care

  • Pampering is a great way to relax and feel rejuvenated. Find time to dedicate a day to pamper yourself. Whether it’s a day at a spa, an at-home manicure/ pedicure, or a mini shopping splurge, take some time to “TREAT YO SELF”.
  • Spending time with family and friends can provide good laughter, bring comfort, and help lift your spirits. Cherish each moment you have with these individuals.
  • Reconnecting with your spirituality (if you are a spiritual person) may help you during difficult life moments.
  • Volunteering to those in need helps to change your perspective and learn to appreciate the “little” things in life.
  • Thank someone. It can be a service member, a teacher, or a stranger holding the door for you. Practice thanking others for the services they provide and random acts of kindness. These moments may improve your mood and they may have a positive impact on others.

I hope you found some useful tips to apply in your daily life. Feel free to share some of the self-care tips you have for living a well-balanced life.
