Taking care of your mental health is an essential part of living a well-balanced life. When your mindset is no longer centered, it’s difficult to manage the daily demands that may arise. Dedicating time to gain mental clarity is beneficial not only to yourself, it has an impact on the people you are in contact with. You will notice a positive change in your well-being once you learn how to take care of your mental health.
Engaging in a fitness regimen is not only beneficial to the body, it can positively impact one’s mental well-being. Studies have shown that exercises such as swimming, jogging, gardening and dancing help reduce anxiety and depression. This is the result of increased blood circulation to the brain during aerobic exercise.
Some of my favorite exercises to improve my mental health include kickboxing, moderate weight lifting, and yoga. When I’m consistent with this routine, I feel great not only physically, but mentally as well.

I will admit that my diet isn’t always as nutritionally balanced as I would like. There are days when I’m completely exhausted, resulting in me picking up something to eat from a restaurant. While this provides a temporary relief to my hunger, it’s only a matter of time before my body signals its displeasure with this choice.
Maintaining a balanced diet is essential to your mental health. Eating well provides the proper nutrients, minerals, and fuel to regulate various physical and chemical functions. Diets high in processed and refined foods promote inflammation and have a negative effect on your body’s ability to regulate insulin. As a result, symptoms of mental health disorders such as depression can worsen.

We have no control over the actions of others, or outside events that occur in our daily lives. The only thing that is within our control is our response. I have found that relaxation techniques such as mindfulness and meditation are great ways to improve my mental health and response to daily life.
Mindfulness refers to a state in which you are fully conscious to events happening in the present moment. It’s similar to meditation in that both allow you to connect with your inner-self. Practicing mindfulness and meditation are great ways to focus your mind and develop a greater sense of mental clarity.
The influence of spirituality on mental health and its ability to help those experiencing a mental disorder is something that wasn’t always accepted in psychology. Early psychologists such as Sigmund Freud, believed religion and spiritual practice were actually examples of psychopathology.
In recent studies, psychologists have determined that religious and spiritual practice have a positive impact on mental health. Regardless of your religious beliefs, spirituality is something that can improve the mental health of those that believe in its ability to do so.
Dedicating a day of the week to self-care is another way to improve your mental health. Use this day to treat yourself to your favorite activities. Although I make an effort to practice some form of self-care each day, I dedicate each Sunday to complete relaxation. I have joked that because my name is Sundaye, I will spend Sunday’s doing whatever my little heart wants (lol).
I usually will spend this day treating myself to an at home manicure, catching up with family and friends, and reading a good book. Treating myself to these comforts not only improves my mental health, it puts me in a positive mindset as I prepare for a new week.
